The National Centre for Cultural Competence (NCCC) at The University of Sydney hosted this month’s ODA workshop led by Associate Professor Gabrielle Russell, focusing on cultural competence in leadership. The session emphasised critical self-reflection, relational accountability, and continuous learning to foster equity and social justice. Culture is not simply one’s ethnicity and race. It’s our gender identity, sexuality, faith, values, and so many things that ultimately contribute to our identity. I found it personally enlightening to take a moment to think about my own culture outside what is visible to or assumed by others – as well as how this might influence the way I connect with people.
We explored with Gabrielle the terminology that exists around cultural safety, responsiveness, capabilities and awareness, as well as some uncomfortable statistics on the prevalence of racism in Australia. Participants explored ways to build inclusive, respectful relationships, challenge assumptions, and create shared visions for change.
Thank you so much, Gabrielle, for this enriching session and insights into the important and challenging work that you do.
