2026 ODA conference review

2026 Conference Review | Cracking Open OD: How open is our OD practice really?

I came to this conference to learn, and I left with more than I expected.

Across three sessions, the themes kept circling back to the same core idea: the conditions we create for people matter more than we often acknowledge. Whether people are willing and able to do their best work is not a mystery. It is a direct reflection of the environment around them.

The opening question stayed with me: what conditions keep each pattern in place? It reframed engagement not as something people either have or don’t, but as something that is actively shaped by purpose, alignment, psychological safety, shared values, and how genuinely we communicate. These conditions are not independent. They reinforce each other or they undermine each other.

The discussions around positive levers were the most practically grounding. Recognition, rituals, celebrating success, succession thinking, service. Things I believe in. But believing in something and consistently practising it are different things. The provocation about what makes a good leader, expertise or communication, was uncomfortable in the right way. The honest answer is that leadership is relational and neither quality alone is enough.

Lindy’s The Strong Back, Soft Front framework gave me language for something I had observed but couldn’t articulate. The strong back keeps you anchored and clear about what belongs to you and what belongs to the system. The soft front keeps you open, present and genuinely connected to people. You need both. Without the strong back, you get swept away. Without the soft front, you just become defended.

The idea that emotions are data, not directives, also landed. The discomfort or unease I sometimes notice in a room often contains the most useful signal about what is actually happening. That is worth paying attention to rather than dismissing.

The note about sitting in discomfort without rushing to resolve it is the thing I am taking most seriously. I move quickly. It is one of my strengths and sometimes my blind spot.

I left with a clearer sense of how I want to operate. A renewed commitment to showing up with purpose, communicating honestly, investing in people, and celebrating the work along the way. I am also very excited to get home and explore Bill’s online treasure chest of OD greatness!
